The "why" question is certainly the key here. Architects translate between different stakeholders - some more technical and some focused on other parts of the business. I Usually explain that architects do 3 things: 1) identify sources of value to the business, 2) identify alternative paths to get there, and 3) establishing the team to build the selected alternative. Architecture tradeoffs are balanced between both short term and long term.
