The "why" question is certainly the key here. Architects translate between different stakeholders - some more technical and some focused on other parts of the business. I Usually explain that architects do 3 things: 1) identify sources of value to the business, 2) identify alternative paths to get there, and 3) establishing the team to build the selected alternative.
